Project Speed Racer: From Wasted To Direct?

From Wasted-Spark To Direct-Fire CDI System.

The ignition system on Mitsubishi 4g93, 4g63 are proven to be reliable from the factory. It is a well known fact that the twin-post coils on 4g93 can be counted on hi-boost, hi-revving engines. But that doesn't mean it can't be improved...

Factory Mitsu 4G9x series twin post coil packs.
Under normal power levels and conditions, the coils would operate without problem in providing the spark required under boost. Some drag cars even choose to retain the OEM coil packs for ease.
Most of the Mitsu 4g9x coil pack on our cars are more than 10-15 years old. They are mostly worn up thanks to years of high heat life under the hood. The combo of Dumb twin-post coil + power TR + plug cables made them unreliable. Most of the OEM factory plug cables would start causing problems once their insulating covers are worn. The ignition leads inside would touch the rocker cover causing the spark to "jump". Even aftermarket plug cables are prone to this failure experience...

Mitsubishi Igniter or as we know "power TR"
The next weakest link on the factory ignition system is the "power TR". The wire & even connectors going inside usually can be easily broken as they are old. Once the igniters fail it can cause many other problems.. Even i have personally face this problem many times.

AEM CDI Pencil Coil-On-Plug  Kit
We are converting Speed Racer's system from a "Wasted spark twin-post coils with igniter" to a Newer reliable coil-on-plug ignition. We use AEM's pencil coils as they have been used on many high rev high HP drag cars. The coil can be used either with 4-channel igniters (wasted spark) or with CDI module.
This eliminates the long & unreliable plug cables permanently.

Easy to wire the Coils to The CDI module. No more plug cables!!

As we are using Haltech PS1000 stand alone ECU, we have adequate channels to run the coils as a Direct fire sequential  ignition. To further improve the spark at both high Rpms and at high boost levels we wire them up to AEM Twin-Fire CDI Module. This provide a short high intensity spark across all Rpm range.

Advantages of AEM Twin-Fire CDI + AEM Pencil COP.
* 540v primary/54,000v secondary voltage energy
* 189mJ spark energy per capacitor
* Multi-Strike capability of up to 10 sparks per ignition trigger (20 degrees)
* Etc
.

Project SpeedART MUSC Drag Machine: The Begining

Its been a while since we participated in MUSC Drag Battle. The last time was on Feb 2011/2nd round. It was disastrous with our ALS & launch control system went haywire...

Our old setup's Personal Best or PB was 10.89sec.. It was okay during the early 2010 season when most of the 1.8 turbo participants consists of 100% daily driven chassis 4g93T gsr. Then the competition when fierce once they started litening their chassis. From experience, we decided to try a new setup for the new season.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  1. Ignition system upgrade
  2. Electronics re-wire
  3. Cylinder head breathing upgrade
  4. Transmission sys upgrade
  5. Turbo upgrade

In order for us to be competitive, we have to focus more on the competitiveness of the car . The "speed ricer", as we call it will become our Speed ARt's official demo & race-car. She will still be street registered but would spend most of her time at the strip..

Our ultimate goal would be to bring her to the maximum potential and start competing on a more serious level such as in Sepang Drag Battle events.
